My Journey into the World of Digital Marketing

I, Rajasree Sunil, started my journey in Digital Marketing in  2020. I am a 42-year-old stay at home mom aspiring to make a career in Digital Marketing.

A Bit of History

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering and graduated in 2001. Soon after graduation, I entered into wedlock with an amazing man with a beautiful heart, who values my opinion and gives me a lot of space and freedom to make my own decisions. Back then my better half had to travel overseas for work. Each time it would be for a duration from 6 months to a year. Being an emotionally attached person, who thought life would be meaningless to stay apart for such a prolonged duration, I decided to take off with him, instead of focusing on developing my career. A couple of years later we settled here in India and were blessed with an adorable daughter. Life was happy and peaceful. I relished every moment of it.

I don’t know if it was the right decision to postpone my career dream, but it was my decision and I chose to do so. No regrets about the decision made then and now.  So, in these 19 years, I just have 4 years of work experience, all in completely different domains.

My Work Experiences

My first job was in 2006, as a Technical Support Executive at a Call-Centre, supporting Routers and Network cards. By then my daughter was 2 years old and thought of giving it a go to commence my career. I had opted for night shifts, so I would be there for my daughter during the daytime and at night, her father would be there. However, I could not continue my work for more than 3 months as our 2-year-old daughter could not cope with my absence then. Even though I was a top performer and had enjoyed working, I chose to pause my career aspirations to look after our little Princess.

Two years later, when my daughter started kindergarten, I took a job in a Law firm as an Admin executive/Engineering assistant. The Job was quite peaceful, with good colleagues, no work pressure, no politics, 5 days a week, work time was 8 to 5, nice pay. I took this job given the fact that my daughter will spend her first half of the day in the school and a few hours in the later half we could manage with a nanny.  This job was something where someone could balance their work life and personal life. But eventually had to give up after a year for the same reason as our daughter could not cope.

Over the years I have worked as a Tech Support Executive at a call centre, as an Admin executive/Engineering assistant at a Law firm, as a Product Manager at a start-up and as an Accounts Manager at an Interior Design Firm. As I had mentioned earlier, the number of years of work experience with all four jobs put together is only 4. Though I was delighted to work, I had to make compromises for various reasons and be a stay at home mom.

Talking about my last job at the Interior designing firm, 2019 to 2020, which I thought was my destiny.  I had a dream of handling an entire project/franchise on my own one or two years down the lane. I cherished my work to the core and so was devastated when I quit. In early 2020 I gave up my job, this time for a different reason altogether and was a full-fledged stay at home mom once again.

Trail of Thoughts

Now that my daughter is in senior high school and soon she will be in college, I was keen to get back to work. This time I was definite that I would not randomly apply for jobs and take up any job I get. Slowly, I started thinking about the career options that would suit my profile. The downside was that I did not have any solid work experience. Since my work was in different domains, it cannot be called a career break as well. Another hitch was my age. Subsequently, I started considering pursuing some certification courses. The next uncertainty was what course and in which domain. I was forced to think of something, where I could have a promising career.

I shared my thoughts with my family and friends. Everyone had different opinions. Many suggested starting some business on my own. Since I had a better sense of clothing, fabrics and designs some wanted me to start a Boutique. As I am a reasonably good cook and my friends loved my food, few wanted me to start a cafe or restaurant or at least cook/bake and sell inside the community we stay in, which I did give a try. I was able to sell my signature cookies and pizzas. But my heart was not into it. I did not enjoy the process at all. Was finding reasons to stop it. Did stop for the reason I met with an accident and ended up having multiple fractures on my shoulder and ball socket of the left forearm joint. Was advised to be on complete rest for 3 months, which allowed me to think further. I considered the option of starting an Interior design firm as I had cherished doing the same. I had contacts with all the vendors related to that field, and all were willing to work for me. Part of me wanted to give it a try.

The Plunge

During the thought process, one day I met my cousin who is much younger than me. He was a Digital Marketer. He had a degree in Bachelor of Commerce. Soon after his graduation he pursued a course in Digital Marketing and immediately secured a job and kick-started his career in the field of Digital Marketing. While talking to him casually about work, I asked him “what is Digital Marketing”. Then I became curious and asked him a lot of questions. That conversation with him made me take a plunge into the world of Digital Marketing. Based on my Digital Marketer cousin’s suggestion, I decided to take a course in Digital Market Academy, Bangalore.

I have journaled a few frequently asked questions (FAQs), which I feel anyone who wishes to take Digital marketing as a career would have.
