Average Meta Ads ROAS by industry

These are indicative ranges based on industry data. Your actual break-even ROAS depends on your gross margin, not these benchmarks.

E-commerce
3 – 5x
Higher for branded, lower for broad audiences
Education and Courses
3 – 6x
High margin product — strong ROAS potential
Lead Generation
2 – 4x
Measured as revenue from closed leads
D2C Consumer Goods
2 – 4x
Thin margins require efficient targeting
Real Estate
2 – 3x
Long sales cycle, high deal value
Healthcare and Wellness
3 – 5x
Regulated — creative and targeting restricted

Three numbers, instant clarity

The calculator gives you results as you type. Here is what each input does.

1
Enter your ad spend

Pull your total spend for the campaign, ad set, or time period from Meta Ads Manager. Use the same period as your revenue figure.

2
Enter revenue or conversions

Switch to conversion mode if you know how many purchases happened and your average order value. The tool calculates revenue automatically.

3
Add your gross margin

This is the percentage of revenue left after cost of goods sold. Without it, ROAS looks great even when you are losing money after product costs.

4
Read your verdict

The tool tells you whether the campaign is profitable, breaking even, or loss-making, and shows exactly how far your ROAS is from the break-even point.

Common questions about Meta Ads ROAS

What is ROAS in Meta Ads?
ROAS stands for Return on Ad Spend. It measures how much revenue you earn for every rupee you spend on Meta ads. A ROAS of 3x means you earned 3 rupees for every 1 rupee spent. It is the most commonly tracked efficiency metric in paid social advertising.
What is a good ROAS for Meta Ads?
A commonly cited benchmark is 4x ROAS, but what counts as good depends heavily on your gross margin. An e-commerce brand with a 25% margin needs at least 4x ROAS just to break even on ad spend alone. A service business or course creator with 80% margins can be profitable at 1.5x. Use the break-even calculator above to find your actual target.
What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?
ROAS measures revenue per rupee of ad spend without accounting for your product cost. ROI factors in your gross margin to show whether you are actually making a profit after cost of goods. A 3x ROAS campaign might have a negative ROI if your margins are thin. Both numbers matter — ROAS measures efficiency, ROI measures profitability.
How do I calculate my break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS = 100 divided by your gross margin percentage. For example, if your gross margin is 40%, your break-even ROAS is 100 / 40 = 2.5x. Any ROAS below that means you are losing money after product costs, even before counting other overheads like staff, software, and shipping.
Why is my ROAS high but my profit is low?
This typically happens when your gross margin is low. If you sell a product at 1,000 rupees but it costs 800 rupees to make and ship, your margin is only 20%. At that margin, you need a 5x ROAS just to break even on ad spend. Enter your margin in the calculator above to see your true profit picture.
What is cost per result and how is it different from CPA?
Cost per result is the Meta Ads Manager term for the average cost of achieving your campaign objective, whether that is a purchase, lead, video view, or something else. CPA (cost per acquisition) usually refers specifically to the cost per purchase. In practice, the two terms are often used interchangeably when the campaign objective is a purchase conversion.
How do I improve my Meta Ads ROAS?
The most impactful levers are improving your creative (video and image), refining your audience targeting, raising your average order value through upsells or bundles, and improving your landing page conversion rate. Better creative typically has the most immediate effect on ROAS because it affects both click-through rate and post-click behaviour.
Can I use this calculator for Instagram ads?
Yes. Instagram ads run through the same Meta Ads platform as Facebook ads, so the same ROAS and ROI formulas apply. Pull your combined spend and revenue figures from Meta Ads Manager, which reports across both placements together.
What is target ROAS bidding in Meta Ads?
Target ROAS (tROAS) is a Meta Ads bidding strategy where you tell the algorithm the revenue-to-spend ratio you want to achieve. Meta then adjusts bids automatically to hit that target across your campaign. It works best when you have at least 50 purchases in the past 30 days and consistent conversion value data in your pixel.
How often should I check my Meta Ads ROAS?
Check ROAS weekly for most campaigns, and daily during high-spend periods like a product launch or a sale. Avoid making changes based on fewer than 50 conversions as small sample sizes can make a profitable campaign look poor and vice versa. Use our A/B Test Significance Calculator to know when a difference is statistically meaningful.
Does this calculator account for Meta attribution windows?
No. This calculator uses the revenue and conversion figures you enter directly. Meta Ads Manager uses different attribution windows (1-day click, 7-day click, 1-day view, etc.), so make sure you pull consistent figures from the same attribution setting when entering your numbers. The default in Meta Ads Manager is 7-day click and 1-day view.
Is this calculator free to use?
Yes, completely free. No login, no credit card, no usage limit. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and no data is sent to a server. You can use it as many times as you like.
