Generate Your Negative Keyword List

Type the main topic of your campaign. The tool detects your industry automatically and returns a categorised list sorted by intent type.

Min 2 characters. Letters, numbers, spaces and hyphens only.

Check this if your keyword is your own brand (e.g. Mailchimp, Digital Market Academy). Review and comparison searches are treated as warm leads and removed from the negative list.

Add these if you do not want traffic from people comparing you against other brands.

Your negative keyword list is ready

These are searches you do not want to pay for. Add them to your campaign as negative keywords and Google stops showing your ad for them — that is how you cut wasted spend.

broad word — blocks that word in any search phrase "word" — blocks that exact wording exact [word] — blocks only that one search

The keywords below are written in Google Ads syntax — quotes for phrase, square brackets for exact, nothing for broad — so Copy gives you text you can paste straight into the Negative keywords box. The CSV is different on purpose: Google Ads Editor reads the match type from its own Criterion Type column, so the keyword there is written plain. Adding punctuation to the CSV as well would double-encode it and import the brackets as part of the keyword.

Tick the keywords you want (risky ones that could block real buyers are off by default), then Copy them into your campaign’s Negative keywords box or Download CSV for Google Ads Editor. Only ticked keywords are exported.

How to Use This Tool

Four steps from seed keyword to a list that is ready to paste into Google Ads or import via Google Ads Editor.

1

Enter your seed keyword

Type the main topic of your Google Ads campaign. This should be your product name, service name or the keyword you are bidding on (e.g. "digital marketing course", "accounting software", "home loan").

2

Select your industry (optional)

The tool auto-detects your industry from the seed keyword and loads the right negative patterns. If the auto-detection is off, pick your industry from the dropdown.

3

Review and select

Your negative keyword list appears grouped by intent: job seekers, researchers, free-only seekers, students and more. Review each group and skip any keywords that do not apply to your campaign.

4

Copy or download

Copy the list to your clipboard and paste directly into Google Ads, or download the CSV and import it via Google Ads Editor. Add the keywords at campaign level for the broadest protection.

What Each Match Type Means

Google Ads gives you three negative match types. Each one blocks a different set of searches.

Broad

Broad match negative

Blocks any search containing that word in any order. Use for short, generic terms you never want to show for, like "free" or "jobs". Broad negative is the most aggressive — it can block searches you did not intend, so use it for very safe exclusions only.

Phrase

Phrase match negative

Blocks searches containing that exact phrase in that order. Use for intent-specific phrases like "digital marketing course free" or "digital marketing jobs in Bangalore". This is the safest and most commonly used negative match type.

Exact

Exact match negative

Blocks only that specific search with nothing added. Use it when you want to block a very specific search but still allow variations. For example, adding [digital marketing salary] as exact negative blocks that search but still allows "digital marketing course salary comparison" to show your ad.

About this tool

Built from Real Campaign Experience

Rajesh Menon built this tool after seeing the same mistake in campaign after campaign: advertisers either skip negative keywords entirely or add a handful of obvious terms and move on. Most Google Ads accounts waste 20 to 40 percent of their budget on irrelevant clicks that a properly structured negative keyword list would have blocked.

This tool generates negative keywords the way an experienced campaign manager would — by thinking about every possible way someone could search for your topic without any intention of becoming a customer.
